Bridgewater CollegeBridgewater College alumna Judith Ely ’69 will exhibit “An Eagle’s View” Sept. 30 through Oct. 29 at Bridgewater College. The show is located on the lower level of the Kline Campus Center. The exhibition is open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday.

An opening reception will be held from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30, with an artist’s talk at 6:30 p.m. In addition, a homecoming reception is scheduled from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. The talk, exhibition and both receptions will be held on the lower level of the Kline Campus Center and are open to the public at no charge.

Ely’s acrylic paintings are abstracted landscapes on canvas or board. The pieces are created by applying several layers of acrylic paint while adding collage, ink and oil pastels, building up underlying shapes and patterns. By using tools to scratch through the layers, the composition is developed by focusing on the shapes and the negative space.

Ely is a member of Beverly Street Studio School in Staunton, Va., the McGuffey Art Center in Charlottesville, Va., and the Shenandoah Virginia Art Center. She is a member of BozART Fine Art Collective and a member and past president of the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild.

Following the 9/11 tragedy, Ely painted “Hope for America,” which was presented as a commemorative gift to the Office of Resource Management of the U.S. Army at the Pentagon.

Ely’s work has been exhibited in juried shows, including the Radius 250 Exhibition at Art Space Gallery in Richmond, Va., and in the Park Gables Gallery at Virginia Mennonite Retirement Community. She also has exhibited work in independent shows at numerous places in the Charlottesville area.

Bridgewater College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located in the Central Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Founded in 1880, it was the state’s first private, coeducational college. Today, Bridgewater College is home to nearly 1,800 undergraduate students.
