BC teaming up with Special Olympics

Bridgewater College – in conjunction with the Old Dominion Athletic Conference – will participate in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area Special Olympics this year with an initiative designed to make selected participants an “Eagle for a Day.”

Bridgewater’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will have each of the college’s sports teams adopt a Special Olympian for the day to be a part of their respective sports team and daily activities. The “Eagle for a Day” initiative will continue throughout the 2011-12 academic year.

Eagles SAAC director and head volleyball coach Erin Albert sees “Eagle for a Day” as an opportunity to give back to the community.

“Our SAAC representatives, team members, and coaches have embraced this idea and are getting excited about the opportunity to reach out into the community and help to positively impact lives in what promises to be an extremely rewarding experience,” said Albert. “Each team is granted creative freedom when it comes to designing the itinerary for the day, so I’m sure we’ll have a wide array of fun activities and events planned, from joining in at batting practice prior to a baseball game to being announced as a starter on the end line at a volleyball match.”

Special Olympics Virginia serves more than 10,000 athletes through seven regional offices and 29 area programs. It is one of 52 U.S. programs, and part of a global movement that serves three million athletes in more than 180 countries.
