Chris Graham

policecar3Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash that claimed the life of an Augusta County woman Wednesday afternoon. At 2:13 p.m., Trooper G.W. Clifton was called to the scene in the 200 block of Route 236/Goose Creek Road.

As a 2001 GMC Jimmy crossed the railroad tracks at the end of a private drive, it pulled into the path of an eastbound Amtrak train. The engineer immediately braked, but was unable to stop the train in time. The train struck the GMC Jimmy, which was thrown off the tracks. The SUV overturned several times. Its driver, Andrea Jane Johnson Gum, 46, of Fishersville, Va., was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene.

None of the 195 passengers or the engineer was injured in the crash. The train, which was en route to Charlottesville, suffered minor damage.
