Longwood University dropped a 96-77 men’s basketball decision on the road at the United States Military Academy (Army) of the Patriot League Tuesday night in West Point, New York.
The Lancers (4-11) trailed 51-30 at halftime and never recovered while led by senior Jeremiah Bowman|Washington, D.C. (Harcum JC) with 17 points, a career-high and game-high 10 rebounds, classmate Antwan Carter|St. Petersburg, Fla. (St. Petersburg) with 15 points and nine rebounds, and sophomore David Robinson|Chesterfield (Cosby) with a career-high 14 points off the bench.
The Black Knights (7-8) made 13-24 three-point field goals and shot 56% (34-61) overall while led by Josh Herbeck with a game-high 19 points, Ella Ellis with 18 points, and Julian Simmons with 16 points.
Longwood and Army played closely to begin the game as the lead changed six times along with four ties during the first seven-plus minutes of the contest. The Lancers led 6-5 at 17:25 after a layup by sophomore transfer Tristan Carey| Colonial Beach (La Salle), and it was 15-13 at 12:44 on a pair of free throws from senior Martiz Washington|Hopewell (Christchurch). The Black Knights responded with 11 unanswered points to lead 24-15 at 10:52 as Herbeck made three-straight three-pointers.
The Lancers, however, battled back and were within 27-24 at 7:58 on a free throw by Bowman. Army, though, would take control while outscoring Longwood 24-6 over the remainder of the first half to lead 51-30 at the intermission. Herbeck had 15 points on 5-7 three-pointers, and Army was 10-15 (67%) from three-point territory by halftime.
Longwood was unable to close the margin much in the second half while within 59-40 at 15:46 on a layup by Carter, and 68-49 at 12:49 on a basket from Bowman. Army took its largest lead at 82-55 with 8:06 on the clock before the Lancers made a final push and closed to within 86-69 at 4:15 after a layup by Washington finished a 14-4 run. The Black Knights outscored the visitors 10-8 the rest of the way for the final margin.
Bowman led Longwood with his 17 points, adding his career-high and game-high 10 rebounds along with six assists while posting his third double-double this season. Carter finished with 15 points and nine rebounds for the Lancers. Robinson added his career-high 14 points off the bench, while Carey had 13 points and Washington added 11 points. LU shot 38% (24-64) from the field, including 22% (5-23) on three-pointers, and 80% (24-30) at the free throw line.
Herbeck led Army with his game-high 19 points, making 6-10 three-pointers. Ellis finished with 18 points for the Black Knights. Simmons added 16 points, Mo Williams had 15 points off the bench, and Milton Washington contributed 11 points. Army shot 56% (34-61) from the field, including 54% (13-24) on three-pointers, and 60% (15-25) at the line.
It was the first meeting between the two schools in men’s basketball.
