Updated Thursday, 3:01 p.m. The backups have been cleared, and the southbound lanes are open on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge Tunnel, according to Virginia State Police.
All lanes remain closed on I-664 north in Suffolk, according to VDOT, with a detour in place at College Drive (exit 8A).
The accident occurred when a semi-truck travelling northbound on the MMMBT slowed due to traffic congestion. A second truck, loaded with lumber, did not stop in time and struck the first tractor trailer; it then caught fire.
The driver of the second tractor trailer, Marvin Tucker, 52, of Whitakers, N.C., was charged with following too closely.
There were no injuries in the accident which remains under investigation.
Original story, posted Thursday, 12:33 p.m. All lanes of the Monitor-Merrimack Memorial Bridge Tunnel in Hampton Roads are closed after a crash involving two tractor trailers.
The accident occurred on the northbound side of travel at 11:17 a.m., according to Virginia State Police.
There aren’t a lot of details at this time, other than one of the two tractor trailers caught fire following the crash.
According to a traffic alert from the Virginia Department of Transportation, all northbound and southbound lanes are closed on Interstate 664 at the tunnel in Suffolk and Newport News.
Diversions are in place on I-664 north at College Drive (exit 8A) in Suffolk and I-664 south at Terminal Avenue (exit 7) in Newport News.
The incident is under investigation.
