science museumDust off your conductor’s hat this Thanksgiving weekend and get ready for the 37th Annual Model Railroad Show at the Science Museum of Virginia.

The Museum invites families and friends to join an annual holiday tradition beginning Friday, November 28 through Sunday, November 30. Guests are encouraged to explore the Museum and enjoy a diverse collection of model train layouts during this special holiday celebration.

“The Model Railroad Show is a chance to celebrate one of the most technologically advanced systems of the 19th century, that served as a transportation workhorse through most of the 20th century and is now something we yearn to bring back in the 21st century,” says Richard Conti, Chief Wonder Officer, Science Museum of Virginia.

Intricate landscapes and miniature cities adorn the Museum all weekend, with layouts ranging from traditional to unique and quirky! Join a workshop to uncover the science of trains or stop by the challenge lab to learn about trains and circuits. Weekend activities also include live science demonstrations, performances by the Carpenter Science Theatre Company and a chance to sample seasonal and healthy snacks inside of the Boost! gallery.

Take a trip to the tracks for exclusive tours of the luxurious Car ONE and self-guided tours of several other historic train cars. While outside guests can watch a blacksmith in action, or enjoy visiting a pair of Clydesdale horses on Saturday and Sunday only. Friday guests can climb aboard a trackless train for rides around the Museum and be the first to experience this special opportunity.

Trains have also rolled into The Dome this holiday season. The Dome will feature special giant screen presentations of Rocky Mountain Express and the classic holiday film, The Polar Express.

The Model Railroad Show is included with exhibit admission. Tickets are $11 with $1 discounts for ages 4-12 and 60+. Showtimes can be found, along with a detailed schedule for the weekend, at www.smv.org or by calling 804.864.1400.
