No. 20 Shenandoah University recorded its second victory over a ranked opponent this season with an 8-3 non-league baseball win over No. 25 Bridgewater College Thursday evening.
In game that took four hours to complete thanks to a 63-minute rain delay in the middle of the first inning, Shenandoah (13-5) pounded out 11 hits against its future ODAC rival.
Bridgewater (15-5) took a 2-0 lead with two runs on two hits in the top of the first against junior Nicholas McMahon (2-1), but McMahon settled in after the long day.
Continually pounding the zone for first pitch strikes, McMahon struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings of work.
After tiring and allowing BC to score one run on three hits in the eighth, McMahon turned it over to freshman Matt Riegler for the final four outs.
Riegler got out of the eighth with a groundball to second and then worked a scoreless ninth to close out the contest.
McMahon retired BC in order in the third, fourth and seventh innings and got an inning-ending double play in the sixth.
In the ninth, SU turned a 5-4-3 double play after the Bridgewater leadoff hitter reached on a single.
Shenandoah took the lead for good with three runs in the second before scoring single runs in the third, fifth and sixth and two in the seventh.
In that second inning, the Hornets sent nine men to the plate as BC starter Corey Armentrout (3-2) hit three batters, walked one and Kurt Krout reached base on a catcher’s interference.
Freshman Corbin Lucas had the big blow with a two-run single to make it 3-2 in favor of the hosts.
Lucas, Jake Pendergraft and Nick Beall all had two hits for the victors.
SU is back in action on Saturday at 1:00 in a USA South contest against Greensboro.
