Bucknell takes two from Longwood

Longwood University dropped both games of a baseball road doubleheader at Bucknell University of the Patriot League Saturday afternoon in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. The visiting Lancers (17-9) lost game one to the host Bison (10-10) by a score of 3-2 before falling in game two by a score of 11-2. Senior captain Brant Jones|Richmond (Monacan) had three hits and an RBI on the day, while freshman Scott Burkett|Williamsburg (Jamestown) added three hits as well.

In the opener, Longwood trailed 2-0 after six innings as Bucknell scored single runs in both the fifth and sixth. The Lancers tied it at 2-2 with two runs in the seventh as Jones (2-4, rbi) hit a clutch two-out RBI double to score junior Michael Sims| Stafford (North Stafford) (2-3) who had doubled to open the inning. Jones later crossed the plate for the deadlock on a run-scoring single by junior Dustin Sollars|Midlothian (Cosby) (1-4, rbi). The Bison, however, scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with two outs on an RBI triple for the victory.

Senior captain Chris Briere|Midlothian (James River) (4-2) took the unfortunate complete-game pitching loss for Longwood with 6.2 innings, allowing eight hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the nightcap, Longwood fell behind 1-0 through three innings before Bucknell scored seven runs in the fourth, adding two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh to lead 11-0 through eight innings. The Lancers avoided the shutout with two runs in the ninth when Jones (1-4) led-off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch, and sophomore Scott Laabs|Glen Allen (Deep Run) (0-2, rbi) added a sacrifice fly that scored Burkett (2-3) who had walked. The Bison had 12 hits in the game, seven for extra bases, including a two-run home run and a three-run double.

Freshman Cory Ramsey|Petersburg (Matoaca) (3-2) started for Longwood and took the pitching loss with the first 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and eight runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Sophomore Bobby Shelton|Forest (Jefferson Forest) tossed the final 4.0 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and no walks.
