Virginia Tech athletics director Whit Babcock said yesterday in response to reports about defensive coordinator Bud Foster’s interest in fining players from their cost of attendance allotment for various transgressions that it was just Foster musing out loud.
Then how to explain the message board listing specific fines for specific offenses and detailing players who had already been assessed fines in training camp?
The Times-Dispatch reported Thursday that images from a TV monitor outside a players’ lounge listed specifics related to fines for individual offenses: ranging from a low of $10 for missing a team breakfast or tutoring session to $100 for drawing a personal-foul penalty.
Multiple transgressions could lead to up to $1,600 in monetary fines and the forfeiture of game tickets for friends and family.
Virginia Tech pays $3,280 in cost of attendance funds for in-state players and $3,620 to out-of-state players. Foster, talking with reporters on Wednesday, suggested that fines could be assessed against those dollars, but Babcock, in an interview with the Roanoke Times, said the fines could not be associated with cost of attendance monies.
