Buttrey, Salem blank Mudcats, 1-0

Chris Graham

salem red soxIn just his second start with the Salem Red Sox, Ty Buttrey spun a three-hit gem and led the Sox to a 1-0 win over the Carolina Mudcats on Friday night at LewisGale Field. The nine-inning contest was completed in just 1:53.

Buttrey (2-0) faced three over the minimum in his seven splendid innings. After allowing a hit in each of the first two frames, Buttrey retired 17 of the final 18 batters he faced, including 11 straight hitters between the second and fifth innings. The righthander gave up just three hits on the night, striking out six while not walking a Mudcat.

Jorge Marban continued the trend out of the Salem bullpen. Marban picked up his first save of the year while yielding one hit in two innings. The win for the Sox snapped Carolina’s nine-game winning streak.

Yean Carlos Gil was just as good as Buttrey for the Mudcats, except for one blip in the second inning. Mario Martinez led off with a double and moved to third on a Franklin Guzman single. Hector Lorenzana followed with a sacrifice fly for what turned out to be the only tally of the game. Gil (0-5) retired 11 in a row at one point as well, but took the loss. He allowed a run on five hits with six strikeouts in seven innings.

The squads will square off in a doubleheader on Saturday evening at 5:05 p.m. Trey Ball (2-2, 5.13) starts in game one for the Sox against the Mudcats (1-3, 6.97). In game two, Aaron Wilkerson (0-0, 0.00) will get the ball for Salem while Carolina will go with Andrew Waszak (1-0, 2.25).

Saturday’s contest continues Pink in the Park weekend in Salem. The Red Sox will be wearing special Pink jerseys that will be auctioned off to benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Fans unable to attend can listen to the game on 1240 AM ESPN Roanoke, online at salemsox.com or via the TuneIn Radio app.
