Farmers get a deadline extension

AFP

farm-droughtVirginia grain and row crop farmers have a few more weeks to update their records at a local U.S. Department of Agriculture Farm Service Agency office.

The deadline to update a farm’s yield records or reallocate what crops are grown on the farm has been extended to March 31. The record changes under the Agriculture Risk Coverage and Price Loss Coverage programs can help farmers get the maximum benefit if they need to use the USDA’s safety net.

The agriculture department is urging both farmers and farm property owners to update their records as soon as possible. If the deadline passes without changes, any possible USDA payments will be made based on potentially out-of-date records.

There are online tools at fsa.usda.gov/arc-plc to help producers explore projections on how ARC or PLC coverage will affect their operations under possible future scenarios. Covered commodities include barley; canola; large and small chickpeas; corn; flaxseed; grain sorghum lentils; mustard seed; oats; peanuts; dry peas; rapeseed; safflower seed; sesame; soybeans; sunflower seed; and wheat. Upland cotton is no longer a covered commodity.

To learn more, contact a local Farm Service Agency office.
