The Eagles took the lead with a goal in the 29th minute off a set piece. Michelle Viegas took a corner kick for the Eagles and served the ball to the back post where Crossman made the shot into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 Eagles lead.

Bridgewater tacked on an insurance goal in the 64th minute. Keri Rager passed the ball to Crossman and the Eagles junior hit the shot with her left foot from outside the 18, sending the ball to the top shelf, far post and into the net for a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles held a commanding edge in the stats, outshooting the Maroons 17-5. Seven different Eagles took shots with Rager leading with five attempts, including two on goal. Crossman and Viegas added three shots apiece. Bridgewater also held a huge 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Goalkeeper Krista Kelly finished the contest with two saves and recorded her third shutout of the season for the victorious Eagles. For the Maroons, Caroline Sarbacher allowed both goals and recorded four saves in 70 minutes of action. Sarah Dvorak finished up and added one save.

The Eagles are now 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the ODAC. Since 2012, Bridgewater is 3-0-1 against the Maroons. Roanoke drops to 4-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

Bridgewater is back in action Wednesday afternoon when the Eagles host Hollins in ODAC action. Game time is 4 p.m.

BC men top Lynchburg: Bridgewater College took advantage of a Lynchburg defensive miscue early in the second half and emerged with a 1-0 victory over the Hornets in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men’s soccer action Saturday evening at Shellenberger Field.

The only score of the game was an own goal as aLynchburg defender’s ball slipped past the Hornets keeper to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute of play.

Bridgewater maintained the advantage the rest of the way despite intense pressure from the Hornets offensive attack during the final 20 minutes of action.

For the game, Lynchburg owned a 20-7 advantage in shots over the Eagles with 11 of those attempts coming in the final 20 minutes.

The Hornets best chance to tie the game came in the 77th minute when a direct kick by Earl Rimbey hit the crossbar and bounced out of play.

Lynchburg had three corner kick opportunities over the final seven minutes, but each time the Eagles defense was up to the task.

Bridgewater keeper Kevin Morris earned the shutout and recorded nine saves during the contest. Two of those saves came during the final seven minutes.

On offense, Adrian Zamora took four of the Eagles’ seven shots with one of those attempts on goal.

Bridgewater is now 2-6 on the season, but both victories have come in conference play as the Eagles stay unbeaten in the ODAC at 2-0. The Hornets drop to 4-3 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Eagles return to action Tuesday afternoon with a home non-conference contest with Southern Virginia.
