pittNeeding a win to sew up an NCAA at-large bid, #5 seed Pitt got what it needed, early, in a 85-57 blowout of #12 seed Wake Forest Thursday in the second round of the 2014 ACC Tournament.

Pitt (24-8, 12-7 ACC) jumped out to an early 11-2 lead and never looked back. It was 39-25 Panthers at the half, and then Pitt went on a 21-6 run to open the second half to go up 60-31 with 12:37 to go on a three-pointer by Josh Newkirk.

Pitt coach Jamie Dixon subbed liberally in the game’s final 10 minutes, and Wake was able to make one run at denting the score, getting to within 19 on two occasions, before Pitt, playing in its first-ever ACC Tournament game, was able to put the game away.

Lamar Patterson led Pitt with 24 points.

Pitt will face #4 seed North Carolina (23-8, 13-5 ACC) in the quarterfinals on Friday.
