Maryland jumped out to an early 12-2 lead and never trailed en route to posting an 83-74 upset of #2 Duke in the 2013 ACC Tournament quarterfinals on Friday.
The Terps (22-11) led by as many as 12 points in the first half before Duke (27-5) cut the lead to eight at 34-26 at the half. A Ryan Kelly bucket and free throw cut the lead to one at 45-44 at the 13:41 mark of the second half, and it was 54-50 at 9:36 on a Rasheed Sulaiman jumper. A Nick Faust three on Maryland’s next possession ignited an 11-2 Terrapins run that pushed the lead to 65-52 on a pair of Pe’Show Howard free throws at 5:47.
The closest Duke would get after that was six at 73-67 on a Seth Curry three-pointer with 2:33 to go. Maryland went 10-for-10 from the foul line in the final 1:56 to seal it.
Wells finished with 30 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and 10-of-10 shooting at the line for Maryland, which shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent (8-of-20) from three-point range for the game.
The win was the second in three meetings in the series for Maryland, which keeps its hopes for an NCAA bid alive for at least one more day.
The Terps will play the winner of the North Carolina-Florida State game in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Saturday.
Mason Plumlee scored 19 on 8-of-12 shooting from the field to lead Duke.
