A 19-year-old shot his way into Westwood Hills Elementary School on Sept. 2, and all we know on the record about what happened comes from a press conference held the day of the shooting, and a statement posted to the Waynesboro Police Department Facebook page two days later.

I reached out today asking for an update on the investigation, and this was what I got back, from a PD spokesperson:

The investigation is still ongoing, and we do not have an update at this time.  When appropriate, we will provide a public update via our social media.

Here’s what I wrote back in response to the young man who handles media requests for the department:

It would be appropriate to issue an update now. People out here assume that the lack of information is the result of the PD and school system not wanting the public to know what actually happened.

The longer there is no reporting from the PD, the more that perception will be the reality.

That may be something for you to pass on to the higher-ups.

What we know: which is, not much
