First quarter
Update: 7:14 p.m. Norfolk State drove to the Virginia 25 on its first series, aided by a third-down defensive holding penalty.
Brandyn Hillman, playing centerfield on a fourth-and-7 pass from the 29, intercepted Deljay Bailey and returned the pick 50 yards to the NSU 37.
At this writing, we’re in a media timeout, with Virginia facing fourth-and-2 at the NSU 6.
Update: 7:18 p.m. Beau Pribula extended the play with his feet, rolled to his right, and found Jacquon Gibson in the right corner of the end zone.
Virginia 7, Norfolk State 0, 7:39/1st
Update: 7:25 p.m. Another Brandyn Hillman INT, next play from scrimmage: 27-yard TD pass from Beau Pribula to Da’Shawn Martin.
Virginia 14, Norfolk State 0, 5:30/1st
Update: 7:36 p.m. Jacquon Gibson 30-yard TD catch, his second of the night. Beau Pribula is 8-of-8 for 120 yards and three TDs.
Score: Virginia 21, Norfolk State 0, 3:12/1st
Update: 7:41 p.m. Defensive tackle Jason Hammond came off the field clutching his left forearm.
First quarter wrap
Score: Virginia 21, Norfolk State 0
Quick analysis: Norfolk State needed everything to go its way to have a prayer, and nothing went its way.
Stats
- Total offense: UVA 170, NSU 59
- Beau Pribula: 9-of-10, 149 yards, three TDs
- Brandyn Hillman: two INTs
Second quarter
Update: 8:02 p.m. Credit to NSU, they’ve put together two nice drives, just have nothing to show for it.
This latest one: 12 plays from their own 10 to get to the UVA 14, plus they had to make up for a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty early in the drive.
So, 91 yards?
It ended with a missed chip-shot field goal.
Update: 8:06 p.m. Beau Pribula had a play-action pass tipped at the line by Quintin Goins, and Josiah Davis came down with the INT on the tip drill.
Goins was one of the three NSU guys that I said to keep an eye on in my pregame coverage …
Update: 8:10 p.m. Marco Perry good on this kick from 40 yards, to cash in the INT.
Virginia 21, Norfolk State 3, 4:05/2nd
Update: 8:22 p.m. Peyton Lewis has entered the chat, scoring on a 3-yard run to cap an 80-yard drive.
Virginia 28, Norfolk State 3, 1:04/2nd
Second quarter wrap
Score: Virginia 28, Norfolk State 3
Quick analysis: This one wasn’t the ass-whuppin’ that the score suggested.
Halftime stats
- Total offense: UVA 244, NSU 170
- Total plays: NSU 40, UVA 27
- Beau Pribula: 12-of-14, 162 yards, three TDs, one INT
- Deljay Bailey: 15-of-24, 142 yards, two INTs
- Virginia: eight different receivers with a reception
Third quarter
Update: 8:47 p.m. Eli Holstein starts the second half as the QB.
Update: 8:54 p.m. Eli Holstein to Ty’Lyric Coleman, nice 1-yard fade pass for the TD.
Drive: 9 plays, 59 yards, 3:57.
Tony Elliott and Des Kitchings learned their lesson from last year, when they left Chandler Morris in for the first series of the second half of the blowout of Coastal Carolina, and Morris hurt his left shoulder, an injury that lingered the rest of the season.
Virginia 35, Norfolk State 3, 10:57/3rd
Update: 9:05 p.m. With twos and threes in the game everywhere, Virginia scores on a five-play, 52-yard drive, capped by a TD pass from Eli Holstein to Isaiah Robinson.
The extra point by Will Bettridge makes him the all-time scoring leader for the UVA Football program.
Virginia 42, Norfolk State 3, 7:21/3rd
Update: 9:20 p.m. Cole Geer now in at QB.
Third quarter wrap
Score: Virginia 42, Norfolk State 3
Quick analysis: lots of good reps for the twos, threes and now some fours and fives.
Stats
- Total offense: UVA 352, NSU 181
- Eli Holstein: 4-of-6, 27 yards, two TDs
Fourth quarter
Update: 9:27 p.m. Cole Geer gets his first career TD pass, a 12-yarder to tight end Hayden Robinson.
Virginia 49, Norfolk State 3, 14:54/4th
Update: 9:42 p.m. Will Bettridge good from 30 to break his own school record for points in a career. (This game has been over since about 7:15 p.m., so, amusing myself here.)
Virginia 52, Norfolk State 3, 7:23/4th
Update: 9:49 p.m. Justin Rowe with the 50-yard picksix of the NSU third-string QB.
Nifty move at the 20 to avoid the tackle.
Cazeem Moore got in the game there on that series. Just back on the roster after a Kentucky judge ruled him and a bunch of other guys from other programs eligible.
Virginia 59, Norfolk State 3, 4:17/4th
Update: 9:58 p.m. Boone Lourd, the fourth QB, getting snaps.
Quick recap
Virginia did what you thought they would do tonight against an overmatched Norfolk State program, winning 59-3 on Friday night.
My goal for the night: nobody gets hurt.
I’ll be interested in the status of defensive tackle Jason Hammond, who left the game late in the first quarter clutching his left forearm, in obvious, pretty intense pain at that moment.
I didn’t see any other injuries of note with the naked eye.
The position coaches were able to get a lot of snaps in the second half for their threes, fours and guys further down the depth chart.
Beau Pribula, among others, didn’t go back out after halftime.
The QB1 was 12-of-14 for 162 yards, three TDs and an INT, on a batted pass/tip drill.
Twelve (12!) guys caught a pass tonight.
Xay Davis had 107 yards on 11 rushing attempts, and Noah Vaughn had 81 yards on eight attempts.
Cornerback Jacobie Henderson had a team-high eight tackles, and preseason All-ACC linebacker Kam Robinson, in his first action in nine months, since going down with a torn ACL in the win over Duke in November, had five tackles.
