Tyree Lee ran for a career-high 166 yards while Taylor Heinicke threw four touchdown passes as No. 4 Old Dominion came from behind to defeat William and Mary 41-31 Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium.
After a high scoring first half that finished with a 28-27 W&M lead, all that was on the board in the third quarter was a 19-yard field goal by John Carpenter to give the Tribe a 31-27 lead.
The Monarchs came through in the fourth quarter as Heinicke tossed his fourth TD pass of the game, this one an 18-yarder to Antonio Vaughan to complete a nine play, 79-yard drive and give ODU a 34-31 lead.
On the following drive, senior defensive back picked off William and Mary’s Michael Graham in the end zone and the Monarch offense drove 80 yards in eight plays and scored on a Lee 16-yard run to push the lead to 41-31. The Monarch defense came up with one more stop to ice the game.
The Tribe got on the board first as Michael Graham hit Sean Ballard down the middle of the field for a 51-yard touchdown pass.
Old Dominion returned the favor quickly going 70-yards in just five plays capped by a 39-yard TD strike from Taylor Heinicke to Nick Mayers. Mayers broke free down the left sideline and Heinicke hit Mayers in stride for the score.
William and Mary retook the lead on the ensuing possession needing just one play, as Graham found Tre McBride down the left sideline for a 72-yard catch and run for a 14-7 Tribe lead.
The Monarchs struck back again as Heinicke hit Mayers for a 19-yard score to make the score 14-13, but ODU went for two and failed.
After the Monarchs forced a W&M punt, Antonio Vaughan picked up a rolling boot from Drake Kuhn at the ODU 30, bounced out to the left and raced 70 yards for an ODU score and the first punt return TD in school history to put the Monarchs on top 20-14.
Then ODU came up big again as Craig Wilkins picked off Michael Graham on the Tribe’s next possession and returned it to the 16 and the Monarchs capitalized as Heinicke connected with Blair Roberts for six yards to give ODU a 27-14 advantage.
The Tribe came back to score the final 14 points of the first half with a seven and four yard TD passes from Graham to Tre McBride.
