Maryland raced out to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and held on late to post a 27-20 victory over Virginia on Saturday in Charlottesville.

The Terrapins (4-2, 2-0 ACC) scored on the first play of the game when Stefon Diggs returned the opening kickoff 105 yards for a touchdown. After UVa. starting quarterback Phillip Sims threw an interception on the Cavs’ first drive, Maryland went up 14-0 on a 20-yard TD pass from Perry Hills to Justus Pickett.

It was a game from there. A Sims-to-E.J. Scott 20-yard TD pass cut a 17-3 Maryland lead in half, and then the ‘Hoos converted a Maryland turnover into three points on a 22-yard Ian Frye field goal that narrowed the margin to 17-13 at the end of three.

The Terps extended the lead to 27-13 on a Hills 6-yard TD run and a 28-yard Brad Craddock field goal.

Backup quarterback Michael Rocco led Virginia (2-5, 0-3 ACC) on a 10-play, 81-yard drive that ended with a 24-yard TD pass to Jake McGee that cut the margin to 27-20.

Virginia forced a Maryland punt and got the ball back near midfield inside of two minutes to play, but Rocco threw four incomplete passes on UVa.’s final drive.

For the third straight week, Virginia lost a game despite outgaining its opponent. The Cavs gained 389 yards of total offense and held Maryland to 240 yards offense, including a net of four yards rushing on 26 attempts.
