Author Jane Austen’s final novel, Persuasion, was adapted for the stage and will be presented by the Wayne Theatre in downtown Waynesboro starting next week.
Award-winning playwright Melissa Leilani Larson’s interpretation invites audiences into a story of reflection, resilience and second chances.
Larson’s adaptation remains faithful to Austen’s language and themes while offering a fresh theatrical lens that highlights the emotional depth and gentle humor of this beloved story.
Set in early 19th century England, Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, a woman who once allowed herself to be guided into giving up the man she loved. When Captain Frederick Wentworth reenters her life years later, she must confront her past decisions and the hope that renewal may still be possible.
“This is one of Jane Austen’s most tender and introspective works,” said Tracy Straight, executive director of the Wayne Theatre. “It explores how time, regret and personal growth shape the heart. We are thrilled to share a production that honors Austen’s voice while giving audiences an unforgettable live experience.”
Persuasion is suitable for families. It is offered at the Wayne Theatre on select dates from Feb. 27 through March 8.
