UVa. adds Corney to ’12 recruiting class

Chris Graham

Virginia head football coach Mike London has announced that Trent Corney has signed a grant-in-aid agreement for the 2012-13 academic year and will be a member of the Cavalier football team this fall.

“Originally we talked to Trent about the possibility of attending a prep school before enrolling at the University,” said Virginia head coach Mike London. “When the opportunity became available for him to enroll this fall he elected that option. We’re happy to welcome him to the 2012 recruiting class. He has a lot of natural athletic ability and we expect he will play linebacker at Virginia.”

A 6-3, 245-pound linebacker from Brockville, Ontario, Corney played his high school football at Thousands Islands Secondary School, helping the Pirates to play for the Eastern Ontario crown in 2011, scoring 16 touchdowns on 35 carries.  Corney was named the defensive rookie of the year in the Ontario Junior Football League (CJFL) in 2011 for the Ottawa Sooner, despite playing only half the season. The CJFL is a national amateur Canadian football league consisting of 19 teams playing in six provinces across Canada. The men’s league features players 23 years and younger.

Corney also is a renowned track and field athlete in Canada. He is the junior national titleholder in the javelin.  Corney set the Ottawa record for his age in the javelin throw at 70 meters. He anchors the Thousand Islands Secondary School’s 4×100 meter relay team and competes on the 4×400 meter relay team too.
