Richmond International Airport will receive $2,250,000 in federal funding to design a consolidated Passenger Screening Checkpoint to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion.

U.S. Reps. Jennifer McClellan, Abigail Spanberger and Rob Wittman announced the funding today. McClellan led a bipartisan push supported by Spanberger and Wittman in September 2023 to the Federal Aviation Administration calling for increased federal funding to support the design and construction of a consolidated passenger screening checkpoint to meet current and projected capacity requirements in Richmond.

Richmond International Airport has incredible impacts on the Central Virginia economy. Last year, the airport reported record passenger traffic, which will continue to grow in the coming years,” McClellan said. “We must ensure we modernize and upgrade existing infrastructure to support current and future needs. I’m thrilled by today’s funding announcement to build a new consolidated passenger screening checkpoint, which will increase capacity and efficiency.”

Spanberger said Richmond International Airport is on track to serve a record number of passengers for a second year in 2024.

“The airport is integral to the continued growth of our Commonwealth’s economy and Virginians’ ability to get where they’re going through the air. I’m proud to have worked alongside Reps. McClellan and Wittman to bring this funding home,” Spanberger said.

The grant funding was awarded through the Department of Transportation (DOT) FAA’s Airport Terminals Program. Established by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, the Airport Terminals Program provides competitive grants for airport terminal development projects that address the aging infrastructure of the nation’s airports.
