Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) netted her 1,000th-career point as the Virginia women’s basketball team (14-4, 2-2 ACC) topped Virginia Tech, 52-39, Thursday at John Paul Jones Arena. The victory also marked the 800th win in the history of the Cavalier program.
Moorer finished with 11 points, one of three Virginia players in double figures, and led the team on the boards with a game-high eight rebounds. Junior guard Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) paced the Cavaliers with 13 points while sophomore guard Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.)added 12.
Moorer reached the 1,000th-point plateau on a free throw early in the second half, becoming the 27th player in program history to reach the milestone.
Virginia forced 20 Virginia Tech turnovers in the contest compared to 12 for the Cavaliers. Both teams finished with 35 rebounds.
The Hokies (6-11, 2-2 ACC) led by as many as seven points with 1:41 to play in the first half and went into the locker room with a 22-17 advantage.
Virginia was able to come back to tie the game at 28 on a pair of free throws from Gerson with 13:25 remaining that followed a key Franklin 3-pointer. From 18:37 to 9:37, a span of nine minutes, the Hokies went without a field goal. The Cavaliers took advantage for a 16-2 run over thatspan, capped by a Gerson 3-pointer than gave UVa a 35-30 lead with 10:17 to play.
Virginia Tech never got closer than three and the Cavaliers led by as many as 15 at the two-minute mark to secure the win.
The Hokies were led by Aerial Wilson’s 14 points and Monet Tellier, who contributed 10 points.
Virginia is back in action at No. 5 Maryland Monday. Tip-off is 8:30 p.m. from the Comcast Center in College Park, Md., and the game will be carried live on the ACC’s Regional Sports Networks.
