A 19-year-old male was found dead in a James Madison University dormitory Thursday morning at 2:30 a.m.

“We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our students. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones,” said Mary-Hope Vass, University spokesperson. “This is a tragic loss to our campus community, and we offer our condolences to those grieving.”

The James Madison University Police Department has requested the Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Culpeper field office conduct a death investigation. Vass said this is “standard protocol.”

The death does not appear to be suspicious in nature, according to VSP. Vass said there is no threat to the safety of the JMU campus.

JMU has support services in place for students, faculty and staff to provide resources, Vass said.

The investigation is ongoing.
