Democrats achieved an important split in the two State Senate elections contested on Tuesday, balancing the expected victory by Republican Jeff McWaters in the Eighth District with a narrow win by Dave Marsden in the race for the 37th District seat held by Republican Attorney General-elect Ken Cuccinelli.

Marsden defeated Republican Steve Hunt by 317 votes (11,943 votes for Marsden to 11,626 votes for Hunt), getting 50.62 percent of the vote to Hunt’s 49.28 percent.

The pickup gives Democrats a 22-18 advantage in representation in the State Senate.

“This victory in Attorney General-elect Cuccinelli’s seat sends a clear message: Virginians want moderate, bipartisan leadership that keeps our Commonwealth the best state to do business and the best state to raise a child,” Democratic Party of Virginia chair Dick Cranwell said in a statement released to the press Tuesday night.

Marsden is expected to be sworn into office on Wednesday for the start of the 2010 Virginia General Assembly session.
