Women’s soccer: St. Mary’s tops EMU, 1-0

AFP

emu sportsThe EMU soccer women took a tough 1-0 loss at St. Mary’s (Md.) today in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon.

The Seahawks were able to control the ball the majority of the game, not allowing EMU to create much of an offensive attack. Despite being out-shot 17-6, the Royals tough defense kept it a close contest.

After a scoreless first half, St. Mary’s finally broke through in the 69th minute when Zoe Smedley sent a ball in from about 30 yards out and got a lucky bounce as the ball went into the net for the lone tally of the afternoon.

The Royals did not go down without a fight as they did have two corner kick opportunities in the final five minutes of the game. The closest opportunity the Royals had was a shot by Emily Hostetler (Marshallville, Ohio / Smithville) that was saved by the Seahawk goalkeeper.

Leah Wenger (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) had 4 saves in goal for the Royals.

EMU has a week-long break between games returning to action next Thursday, September 13, for a scrimmage against Mary Baldwin.
