Update: Multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 81 in Rockingham County

Update: Tuesday, July 24, 4:15 p.m. Both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 have reopened following a multi-vehicle crash earlier this afternoon at mile marker 237 near the Augusta-Rockingham county line. Traffic is currently backed up about eight miles, so motorists should use extra caution as congestion eases in this area.

 

Update: Tuesday, July 24, 3:19 p.m. The left lane of southbound Interstate 81 has reopened at mile marker 237 near the Augusta-Rockingham county line, where a multi-vehicle crash took place earlier this afternoon.

Traffic is currently backed up nearly 10 miles into the Harrisonburg area.

The I-81 southbound detour at exit 240 (Mount Crawford/Bridgewater) will be lifted when congestion south of the exit has cleared.

First report: Tuesday, July 24, 2:13 p.m. Both southbound lanes of Interstate 81 are blocked by a multi-vehicle crash at mile marker 237 near the Rockingham-Augusta line. The crash was reported shortly before 12:30 p.m., and backups have reached at least eight miles. Incident responders are on scene and working to reopen the interstate.

Southbound I-81 traffic is being detoured onto Route 11 (Lee Highway). Motorists will take I-81 exit 240 (Mount Crawford/Bridgewater), follow Route 257 (Friedens Church Road) west, Route 11 south and Route 256 (Weyers Cave Road) east to rejoin the interstate at exit 235.
