Warner, Kaine announce $9.5 million for Virginia K-12 schools, universities

Chris Graham

congressU.S. Senators Mark R. Warner and Tim Kaine announced that the U.S. Department of Education has awarded grants totaling $9,589,377 to help Virginia’s K-12 schools improve student achievement and support colleges and universities in providing better outreach and student services to individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“The investment will help close some of the gaps that exist for students at lower-performing schools. This is more than just extra funding – this is a lifelong investment in their future success, and in the long-term strength of our communities,” said Sen. Warner. “This funding will provide a support for students at an early age, and continue investing in their academic achievement so they can graduate from college, and join the workforce fully equipped with the knowledge they need to succeed.”

Under today’s announcement, K-12 schools throughout Virginia will receive a total of $8,150,434 in fundingthrough the Department’s School Improvement Grant (SIG) program to improve student achievement in the classroom.

The following universities and colleges will receive funding through the Department’s Educational Opportunity Centers Program:

  • Virginia Commonwealth University: $236,000
  • Virginia State University: $236,900
  • Old Dominion University Research Foundation: $494,575
  • Danville Community College: $236,000
  • Portsmouth Public Schools: $235,468

Both as Governors and Senators, Warner and Kaine have advocated for robust investments in education.
