Men’s tennis: #1 UVA downs Miami in regular-season finale

The No. 1 UVA men’s tennis team (22-3, 11-1 ACC) closed out the regular-season by earning a 7-0 victory over Miami (8-14, 3-9 ACC) on Sunday (April 17) at the Snyder Tennis Center.

After splitting doubles on court one and two, senior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and junior Luca Corntelli (Alexandria, Va.) closed out a 6-4 win on court one to give the Cavaliers the doubles point. The Cavaliers won singles 1-5 in straight sets. On court six, senior Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) dropped his first set 6-3 to Niclas Genovese, but battled back to win his second set 6-3. With the match score at 6-0, Styslinger and Genovese played a tiebreaker instead of a full third set with the Cavalier fourth-year winning 10-4 to give UVA a 7-0 victory on Senior Day.

The victory also gave the Cavaliers sole possession of first place and their 13^th-consecutive ACC regular-season championship.

“The 13-consecutive ACC regular-season titles is an overwhelming statistic considering the strength of this league,” said Virginia head coach Brian Boland. “I am thrilled for our players, particularly our seniors. Mac Styslinger, Jonathan Cornish and Ryan Shane have meant so much to our program. This was a great way to finish our season. I thought we came out and played with a lot of energy, and it lasted throughout the match. I feel like we are really strong right now and really playing well. This is exactly where we want to be heading into the postseason.”

In doubles, senior Jonathan Cornish (London, England) and redshirt junior Harrison Richmond (Pawley’s Island, S.C.) cruised to a 6-1 victory over Jesse Flores and Kevin Bondar to improve to 6-0 in dual matches this season.

In singles, junior J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) started things off with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Bernard Tefel at No. 4, followed in rapid-succession by sophomore Collin Altamirano winning 6-4, 6-2 over Flores at No. 3 and junior Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) winning 6-2, 6-1 over Max Andrews at No. 2 to clinch the victory. Shane defeated No. 37 Piotr Lomacki 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Sophomore Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) finished with an 11-0 record in singles in conference matches this season after winning 6-3, 6-2 over Fermin Calvo at No. 4.

The postseason begins next week for the Cavaliers as they head to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Men’s Tennis Championship. As the top seed, Virginia will begin play on Friday, April 22 at 1 p.m., in the quarterfinals, facing the winner of Thursday’s 8 vs. 9 match between NC State and Clemson.
