VCU hosts conference on literacy instruction in a digital world

vcuVirginia Commonwealth University’s School of Education is hosting the second annual “Teaching Literacy in a Digital World” conference, which will focus on current research and instructional strategies related to the use of technology in pre-K-12, college and adult education settings.

During this conference, general sessions, combined with breakout and poster sessions covering a variety of topics, will include speakers such as Rachel Karchmer-Klein, M.Ed., associate professor of literacy education at the University of Delaware; Jill Castek, Ph.D., research assistant professor with the Literacy, Language & Technology Research Group at Portland State University; Monty Jones, Ph.D., assistant professor of teaching and learning in VCU’s School of Education; and Tom Woodward, associate director of learning innovation at VCU’s ALT Lab. Conference presentations cover three main themes: reading and writing in digital environments, digital literacy in an “open” world, and social media and education.

The conference will be held Saturday, April 16, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration from 8 to 9 a.m. at the VCU Academic Learning Commons at 1000 Floyd Ave. on the Monroe Park Campus. The cost to register is $75, or $40 for students. Conference sessions and materials, parking, morning refreshments and lunch are provided with registration.
