Broomley Road in Ivy reopened to traffic

Chris Graham

road-work-headerThe Virginia Department of Transportation reopened Route 677 (Broomley Road) in western Albemarle County this evening, just before 7 p.m. The road had been closed for seven months for replacement of the bridge that spans the Buckingham Branch Railroad tracks.

Detour signs will be removed on Thursday morning, when crews can safely work on roadway shoulders. Other finishing work will occur over the next several weeks, with lane closures in place and traffic controlled by flaggers. Motorists should anticipate minor delays during daytime work hours.

Under a $3.31 million contract, Orders Construction Company Inc. of St. Albans, W.Va. began work on the Broomley Road bridge in May. The project involved removal of the original aged structure, which was prohibited for use by vehicles weighing more than 10 tons, including fire trucks. In its place, a single-span steel truss bridge was built that can carry all legal loads.

More information can be found on VDOT’s website at www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/rt677bridge.asp.
