Buena Vista man dies in Augusta County crash

policeVirginia State Police Sr. Trooper S.A. Simmons is investigating a fatal crash in Augusta County. The crash occurred Tuesday (Dec. 8) at 12:10 p.m., on Route 250, approximately 100 feet west of Idlewood Boulevard.

A 1998 Jeep Cherokee was traveling east on Route 250 when it crossed through the center turn lane and continued into the westbound lanes. The Jeep first sideswiped a westbound 2000 Honda CRV and then struck head-on a westbound box truck.

The driver of the Jeep, Michael L. Gibson, 71, of Buena Vista, Va., was transported to Augusta Health, where he later died. Gibson was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the Honda, Linda J. Collins, 68, of Staunton, Va., was transported to Augusta Health for treatment of serious but non-life threatening injuries. Collins was wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the box truck, Alan Balsley, 59, of Staunton, Va., suffered minor injuries. He was not transported for treatment. He was wearing a seat belt.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.
