Young Artists’ Recital set for May 7

BachFestivalThe Young Artists’ Recital, sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, will take place in Harrisonburg on Saturday, May 7, at 3 p.m., in Martin Chapel, in the Seminary Building on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University.

The Young Artists’ Recital, sponsored by the Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 3:00 p.m. in Martin Chapel, in the Seminary Building on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg. This free concert is open to everyone.

These outstanding teen performers were selected through a competitive process and include pianists Gabriel Cho (Staunton) and Clara Stelow (Charlottesville), oboists Lauren Derflinger (Mt. Jackson) and Laura Ruple (Harrisonburg), harpist Morgan Short (Roanoke), and violinists Katrina Kirilyuk (Harrisonburg) and Madeline Williamson (Harrisonburg). The musicians come from the studios of teachers Joan Griffing (violin), Rhonda Stees (oboe), Lynne Mackey and Jeremy Thompson (piano), and Elisabeth Remy Johnson (harp).

Works by Bach, Chopin, Nielsen, Telemann, Balakirev, Accolay, Marcello, McLean, Grandjany, Salzedo, and Nicolas/Bochsa will be performed.

Background: Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival

The Shenandoah Valley Bach Festival, founded in 1992, is an annual summer music festival that takes place on the campus of Eastern Mennonite University and at First Presbyterian Church in Harrisonburg, VA. During the week June 12-19, 2016, a feast of orchestral, choral, and chamber music concerts as well as a Leipzig Service are scheduled in Harrisonburg. The Festival Orchestra features fine professional musicians from all over the country.

The Festival Choir, a volunteer ensemble, features both amateur and professional vocalists. Some concerts require tickets that can be purchased in advance online.
