A fifth-inning Mark Teixeira RBI double broke a 3-3 tie, and the New York Yankees went on to a 4-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday.
The O’s had tied the game at 3 in the top of the fifth on a Caleb Joseph RBI double. After a Manny Machado sacrifice bunt and Jimmy Paredes walk, Adam Jones was at the plate with runners on the corners and one out and a chance to break the tie.
But New York starter Nathan Eovadli picked Paredes off first for the second out, and then Jones grounded out to end the threat.
The Orioles would mount only one other threat the rest of the way, getting runners on first and third with two outs in the sixth, but Travis Snider grounded to third to end the inning with no damage.
Paredes and Joseph each hit solo homers for Baltimore, which was just 1-for-6 at the plate with runners in scoring position.
Eovaldi (3-0) got the win, giving up three runs on six hits in five and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking three.
Andrew Miller pitched a scoreless ninth to record his 12th save.
Chris Tillman (2-4) took the loss for the O’s, giving up four runs on 10 hits in five and two-thirds, striking out three and walking three.
