James River Writers is teaming up with Richmond Young Writers and the Girls of Summer to present Writing for Girls. We will discuss what it means to write for girls–both young and not-so-young.
- How is writing for girls different than boys in today’s world?
- How does diversity feature into these stories?
- How are gender roles/identity changing the stories girls read or want?
- Girls become women, so how do female protagonists in adult literature stack up?
- Do boys read books with girl protagonists?
Rebekah Pierce will moderate the discussion. JRW is excited to welcome Sarah McGuire, author of the debut novel Valiant, to the stage and to introduce Odessa Hott and M.E. Novak, who are Richmond Young Writers.
The Girls of Summer is a summer reading list focused on stories for strong girls, curated by Meg Medina and Gigi Amateau.
Richmond Young Writers was founded in the summer of 2009 at Chop Suey Bookstore with the intention of introducing young people to the joy of creative writing through workshops taught by professional writers in the community.

Moderator/Presenter Rebekah Pierce has been writing and teaching English Literature for over fifteen years. She is a lover of mystery novels that feature female protagonists who have their own demons to fight as they save the day. Her first novel, Murder on Second Street: The Jackson Ward Murders, is a blend of History and fiction. In December 2014, Pierce released her second historical fiction novel, The Secret Life of Lucy Bosman, set in Richmond, Virginia in 1862.
Sarah McGuire is the author of the YA (Young Adult) novel, Valiant. She loves fairy tales and considers them the best way back to Narnia- at least until she finds a working wardrobe. She lives within sight of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, where she teaches high school creative writing and math classes with very interesting word problems. During the school year, she lives on coffee, chocolate, and afternoon naps that allow her to write late into the night. During the summer she loves having the extra time to travel and, of course, write.
M.E. Novak and Odessa Hott are members of Richmond Young Writers and will provide a fresh perspective from younger readers who write. M.E. says, ““I like to write prose, lgbtq+ fiction, flash fiction, and horror. I would love to discuss these topics as gender identity and roles are a very big part of my life and my writing.”
