World Fair Trade Day: A StauntoNites event

staunton virginiaAdventure your way through downtown Staunton for the Queen City’s fifth annual World Fair Trade Day celebration, hosted by three local businesses on Saturday, May 12.

Harmony Moon, Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery, and Latitudes will host a Scavenger Hunt that takes shoppers to all three fair trade stores, looking for clues and trivia for a chance to spin the Fair Trade Prize Wheel.

The event will be the second installment of StauntonNites, a monthly series of events aimed at bringing a more vibrant nightlife to downtown Staunton. The World Fair Trade Day events and specials will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Also, Mary Baldwin University will host a special WFTD outreach event on campus on Wednesday, May 9.

Fair Trade is a global movement that ensures that workers and artisans in developing countries receive a living wage for their work and healthy and safe working conditions. Purchasing fair trade products empowers individuals in poorer regions of the world to transform the lives of their families and communities.

Participating stores in Staunton will feature their fair trade offerings:

  • Harmony Moon (13 S. New St.) will have a children’s craft activity, fair trade refreshments, and a drawing for fair trade prizes. Also, 10% of all purchases will be donated to the Conscious Connections Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports education for girls in Nepal.
  • Cranberry’s Grocery & Eatery (7 S. New St.) will host the Fair Trade Prize Wheel and will offer discounts on select Fair Trade products.
  • Latitudes will offer 15% off clothing and give out free chocolate samples. Also, an artist will be on hand to give Henna Tattoos from2 p.m. – 5 p.m.
