Women’s soccer: No. 1 Virginia faces NC State Wednesday

uva-ncsuThe top-ranked Virginia women’s soccer team hits the road to face the NC State Wolfpack at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in the first of two road matches this week. The two road contests close the regular season for the Cavaliers.

Virginia (13-1-1, 7-1-0 ACC) is coming off a pair of shutouts this past week against Louisville and then No. 1 Florida State to move back into the top spot in the national polls. The Cavaliers are looking to secure the Atlantic Coast Conference regular season championship and a lock up seeding in next week’s ACC Touranment.

NC State (4-13-0, 0-8-0 ACC) is coming off 1-0 loss to Louisville on Sunday afternoon and looking to break into the win column in conference play. The match, was originally scheduled to by played at the beginning of October, but was postponed due to inclement weather throughout the region that weekend.

One of the top offensive teams in the nation, Virginia is paced by juniors Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) and Morgan Reuther (Chantilly, Va.). Shaffer leads the way with eight goals on the season and scored the game-winner against Florida State on Sunday, converting a penalty kick in the 1-0 victory. She also provided the assist on the game-winner against Louisville on Thursday night. Reuther is second on the team with seven goals this season and has been a consistent scoring threat up top for the Cavaliers.

Senior Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) leads the squad with seven assists on the season and has added three goals of her own this season as the Cavaliers spread the ball around. In all, 12 different players have scored this season with seven different players hitting game-winning goals.

Morgan Stearns (San Antonio, Texas) is the reigning ACC Defensive Player of the Week and has combined with a stout back line that has posted nine shutouts on the season and six shutouts in conference play.

NC State relies on Jackie Stengel as the primary goal producer for the Wolfpack with five on the year. – including two game winners Seven different players have scored this season for NC State while 11 different players have tallied an assist.
