Women’s soccer: Late goal lifts Bridgewater to key ODAC win

bridgewater eaglesBridgewater freshman Isabella Weigel scored the winning goal in the final minute Wednesday evening, lifting the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Shenandoah in a key conference contest.

The victory over the Hornets, who entered the contest in first place in the ODAC, clinches a first-round bye in the conference tournament for the Eagles.

The contest was close throughout with the Hornets holding a 13-9 edge in total shots and a 4-2 margin in corner kicks. The Eagles, however, put more shots on goal, holding a 6-3 edge in that category.

The game appeared destined for overtime until Weigel found the back of the net with just 38 seconds left in regulation. Weigel knocked in a rebound of her own shot that was blocked by a Shenandoah defender. The goal was the team-leading 11th of he season for Weigel.

Bridgewater keeper Hayley Talbott finished with three saves to record the shutout. The shutout was the 11th of the season for the Eagles and the sixth for Talbott.

Bridgewater, now 13-3-1 overall and 6-2-1 in the ODAC,  is back in action Saturday afternoon when it concludes the regular season with a road trip to Roanoke College.
