Women’s basketball: Virginia hosts Virginia Tech on Sunday

virginia virginia techThe Virginia women’s basketball team (13-10, 3-6 ACC) hosts Virginia Tech (14-8, 2-7 ACC) on Sunday, Feb. 7 at 2 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

The Virginia-Virginia Tech game is part of the Commonwealth Clash presented by Virginia529, which is a head-to-head, points-based competition between the athletic teams of the Cavaliers and Hokies. The Commonwealth Clash encourages a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two schools across all school-sponsored sports with 21 individual event points on the line. The school that accumulates 11 points or more will be crowned the winner and take home the Virginia529 Commonwealth Clash trophy.
The UVA-VT game is worth a half point in the Clash.  The score for this year’s Clash is Virginia 3.5 and Virginia Tech 3.0.  UVA claimed the inaugural Commonwealth Clash 15-7 last season.

Virginia is currently ranked ninth in the ACC at 3-6, while Virginia Tech is tied with North Carolina in 11th place with a 2-7 league record.

UVA has lost five of its last six games including a 67-52 setback at Duke on Thursday (Feb. 4). Virginia Tech has lost its last five games and seven of its last eight including a 51-34 loss against Georgia Tech on Thursday.

Sophomore Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) grabbed a career-high six steals at Duke, the most by a Cavalier in a single game so far this season.

Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) scored 22 points at Duke, her seventh 20-point game of the season. Venson scored 13 of Virginia’s 19 third-quarter points, going 5-of-7 overall and 3-of-3 from three during the period. Venson is currently seventh in the ACC in scoring, averaging 15.4 points per game.

Junior Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) has scored in double-digits in eight of the last nine games, including contributing 11 points at Duke. Mason is shooting 48.1 percent in ACC games overall and in the last six games is 38-of-72 (52.7 percent).

The Cavaliers have won 18-straight match-ups against the Hokies with six of the last eight meetings decided by double-digits. UVA is 45-10 all-time against the Hokies and is 20-2 in ACC contests with Virginia Tech’s last victory in the series coming on Jan. 22, 2007.

Virginia Tech leads the ACC in scoring defense, allowing opponents to score just 51.2 points per game, but is second-to-last in scoring offense, averaging 58.8 points per game. Virginia is averaging 65.7 points per game and allowing opponents to score 60.5. Teams are shooting 33.8 percent against Virginia Tech and 25.0 percent from three-point range. Vanessa Panousis leads the Hokies, averaging 10.0 points per game. Regan Magarity leads the rebounding effort at 5.5 per game.

Prior to the Virginia Tech game, there will be a pregame youth sports festival from 12:30 pm – 1:45 pmon the third floor concourse by sections 316–319. Sport stations include rowing, softball, golf, basketball, football and volleyball. Youth who complete all sport stations will receive a free t-shirt. There will also be inflatables, a face painter, balloon artist, poster coloring and a photo booth. Admission to the festival is free with a game ticket.

The Cavaliers close out their current homestand when they host Syracuse on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 7 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

Single-game ticket prices for all home games are $10 for Reserved seating, $8 for adult General Admission and $6 for youth (18 & under), senior (60 & over) and UVA faculty/staff General Admission.
