On a perfect day for golf, with temperatures in the mid-80s, and a limitless sunny sky, 20 teams took the course for the 2014 Merv Wooten Invitational at the Waynesboro Country Club on July 11, raising more than $10,000 for the Waynesboro Family YMCA.
Among those putting their long and short games to the test was the tournament’s namesake, long-time Waynesboro Y executive director Merv Wooten.
“We have 20 teams today, which is a great number,” said Wooten, who put together the first local YMCA golf tournament more than two decades ago. “It’s a great cause. It benefits the youth in the community, and it gives the Y the opportunity to serve people who wouldn’t normally be able to use the Y.”
Sponsored by Weaver Insurance and Financial Advisors and Bowman Family Dentistry, proceeds from the 2014 tournament will be used towards scholarships for youth programming and families that normally could not afford Waynesboro Family YMCA programming, said Y executive director Jeff Fife.
Teams participated in a modified Captain’s Choice format that awarded top three placements for Low Gross and Low Net scores.
The top flight Net winners were Bill League, Chris Wooten, Merv Wooten and Brandon Wooten, shooting a 52. The overall Net competition was tight with the second place finishers only one stroke behind the leaders. Kurt Knott’s hot putting aside, the second place Net finishers of Knott, Lee Quillen, Bill Knizner and John Kanney could not catch the leaders.
The third place Net winner was Cavalier Rentals made up of Chris Darden, Scott Jones, Kevin McGee and Bill Old.
The first place Gross winner, firing a 57, was the Weaver Insurance team fielded by J.R. Showalter, Brent Showalter, Seth Bokleman and Kevin Lloyd. The second place Gross finisher, also posting a 57, was one of the teams from Bank Design & Equipment – Tom Austin, Joe King, Tom Schaffer and Robert Gabler.
The third place Gross was First Bank & Trust lead by Jim Hyson. Other team members included Frank Lucente, Lloyd Holloway and Guy Wright.
There were multiple games and prizes included with the tournament. Kevin Lloyd won the Cavalier Rental Challenge winning a 51-inch flat screen TV by hitting his ball into the Y logo on the 14th hole. The Obaugh Chevrolet putting contest was fiercely competitive with John Matherly leading the top 10 finishers landing his put within 1/10th of an inch of the cup from 30 yards out. In the putt off, he again was closest to the cup and drove off in the grand prize – a used Chevy Aveo.
Closest to the pins on the remaining Par 3s were Bill Cline, Scott Smith and Clyde Jenkins, who each won a cash prize donated by Tailgate Grill and Graves Enterprises.
