Waynesboro Public Library: June 2014 Schedule

waynesboro2editsJune – Book-A-Trip. Everyone is invited to read A Stillness at Appomattox by Bruce Catton. Then, join the bus trip to the Appomattox Court House National Historic Park & Museum of the Confederacy in August. Books will be available to purchase at the library.

Monday, June 2 – Paws to Read Children’s Summer Reading Program signups begin. Children receive one library dollar for every picture book read, or every ten pages of a chapter book read.  Use the bucks to buy books from our mobile store through August 2nd.  Weekly prizes are available for all participants.

Monday, June 9 – Literary Elements Adult Summer Reading Program signups begin. Summer reading isn’t just for kids! Adults could win prizes this summer by checking out books, writing a review (of a book or audiobook), or attending a program. One prize will be drawn each week, and all entries will be eligible for the grand prize drawing.

Tuesday, June 3, 7:00 pm – Library Squares. Patterned after Hollywood Squares, it’s a tic-tac-toe game involving trivia and well-known locals as the Xs and Os. Come cheer on your favorite contestants and Waynesboro celebrities.

Wednesday, June 4, 2:00 pm – Book Talk: Lynn Coffey. Lynn Coffey is the author of Backroads, a series that culls information and stories from her neighbors in Love, Va. She’ll discuss her books and preserving Appalachian culture.

Thursday, June 12, 7:00 pm – Book Talk: Jonestown. WPL’s Assistant Director Ryan Roy discusses his first novel detailing the events of Jonestown, Jim Jones & The People’s Temple and the horrendous tragedy that transpired in 1978.

Friday, June 13, 6:30 p.m. – Friday Night at the Movies. Showing new releases on the big screen. Free popcorn and drinks. Check at the library for the featured film.

Wednesday, June 18, 7:00 p.m. – Wednesday Night Book Club. Fascinating and far ranging discussion with other book lovers. The book is provided, participants vote on selections, and a staff member leads the discussion.

Saturday, June 21, 10:00 am – Summer Read and Run. Children and their caregivers are invited to participate in the first annual WPL family fun run.  This 1-mile run/walk will take place along the greenway beginning at the Constitution Park entrance. Strollers and leashed dogs are welcome.

Saturday, June 21, 12:00 pm – Puppet Show. The Good Life Theater presents “Crooning with Critters,” aninteractive musical show featuring puppets, live music, and lots of songs about our animal friends, as a kick-off to the summer reading program.

June 23-June 2710:00 – 7:00 pm – Scholastic Book Fair. If you love the summer reading program support youth services at the yearly book fair.  This year we are offering an SRP basket raffle.  For every $10 spent at the Scholastic book fair you receive one raffle ticket.  The more you support children’s programs the more chances you have to win!

 

Weekly – No programs: May 26-June 6

Monday

10:30 a.m. Swing and Sway This music and movement class is just the thing you need to get started in the morning. No stories, just song and dance.  Ages 0-6.

4:00 p.m. WPL Knitters. Bring your materials and socialize with other knitters.

 

Tuesday

9:30-11:30 a.m. Chat-N-Play provides interactive play for your little one and conversation for you. Open to children ages 0-3 and their caregivers.

 

Wednesday

9:30 a.m.  Mother Goose Time is an interactive program featuring songs, finger-plays, books, movements, and nursery rhymes for children from birth through age two and their caregivers.

10:30 a.m.  Story Time features books, stories, songs, puppets, flannel board activities, and crafts for children ages two through five accompanied by an adult.

 

Thursday

9:30 a.m.  Mamá Ganso, mother Goose in Spanish, features stories, songs, finger-plays, and movements for children from birth through age two and their caregivers.

10:00 a.mComputer classes are offered Thursday of every week. Classes rotate between Computer Basics, Basic Internet Skills, Introduction to Microsoft Word and Introduction to Microsoft Excel.  Call (540) 942-6746 to register.
