Zoomed Image of SuspectThe Waynesboro Police Department is investigating the attempted armed robbery of the Royal Mart gas station and convenience store, 501 Rife Road, which occurred earlier today.

At approximately 10:05 a.m. Friday, an unidentified male entered the store, walked around for a few minutes then approached the male and female employees at the cash register appearing to purchase a bottle of soda.  When he was at the counter, he brandished a tire iron and demanded the employees give him the cash in the register.  He also alleged to have a firearm but none was displayed.  After being unsuccessful in getting the employees to open the register, the assailant grabbed the register, but dropped it on the floor leaving with no cash or merchandise.  He then fled the store on foot heading north through the Tree Streets neighborhood.

At the time, the suspect was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with ARMY displayed on the front and aviator sunglasses.  These items were discarded by the suspect approximately 300 feet from the crime scene in the alley between Walnut and Chestnut Avenue.  A K9 tracking unit from the Virginia State Police responded to the scene and tracked the suspect to the 400 block of Chestnut Avenue where the track ended.

The description of the assailant is below –

  • White/male
  • 20 to 30 years old
  • 6’1” to 6’4”
  • Slender frame
  • Some facial hair (scruffy)
  • Also wearing gloves and blue jeans

Anyone with information in this incident is asked to call Detective Chris Cross with the Waynesboro Police Department at (540) 942-6675 or Central Shenandoah Crime Stoppers at 1(800)322-2017.  Information given to Crime Stoppers may be given anonymously.  Callers with information that lead to an arrest in this case are eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
