policecar3Waynesboro Police have charged one of their own related to a Jan. 18 accident in Downtown Waynesboro that sent a 71-year-old woman to the hospital.

Officer Shamica R. Spears, 27, has been charged with reckless driving and will face a pending date in Waynesboro General District Court on the charge.

Spears was responding to a reported domestic incident when her police cruiser struck a 2003 Hyundai being driven by Annette S. Powell. Both drivers were injured in the accident, according to earlier police reports.

The cruiser was driving through the intersection at Arch Avenue and Main Street in Downtown Waynesboro coming north on Arch. Powell was driving west on West Main. The force of the accident sent her car into the Waynesboro Visitors Center building at 301 W. Main St.

Spears was honored by the Waynesboro PD last month with two Departmental Commendations for her exceptional performance in speed and seatbelt enforcement in calendar year 2012.
