Waynesboro group gives literacy a BOOST

boostThe Waynesboro Arts and Culture Initiative in partnership with the Boys and Girls Club of Waynesboro, Staunton, and Augusta County is excited to announce the launch of BOOST Literacy, a $5,000 accelerated literacy pilot initiative targeted at improving the basic literacy skills of some of our community’s most at-risk kindergarten through third grade public school students.

“We need to do all we can to improve the literacy of our smallest citizens to increase the probability of their long term academic success. The BOOST Literacy initiative isn’t a cure-all, but it’s a step in the right direction.”, says Terry Short Jr., founder and president of the Waynesboro Arts and Culture Initiative. “We can either complain about a condition, or try to do something about it. We hope this contribution can help those that need the support of our community the most.”

The BOOST Literacy initiative will identify up to 20 at-risk students and provide tutors at no-cost for an after school reading program, four days a week for the balance of the 2015-2016 school year.

“We plan to measure our success, report our story back to the community, make adjustments, and hopefully make this an ongoing program to be financed by the Waynesboro Arts and Culture Initiative, and potentially other local sponsors,” says Short.

“The Boys and Girls Club of Waynesboro is grateful for the opportunity to provide such a creative and important literacy program to the Waynesboro community. Thanks to the generosity of the Waynesboro Arts and Culture Initiative, we will be able to supplement our current programs and provide these youth with more attention and resources to improve their early academic success,” noted Tom Hardiman, treasurer of the Waynesboro Boys and Girls Club.

The Waynesboro Arts and Culture Initiative is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to the enrichment of the arts, civics and culture of Waynesboro Virginia. The organization produces the Virginia Chili, Blues and Brews Festival.
