gensWaynesboro Generals starting pitcher Griffin Krieg put in seven strong innings, and a Mike Marcinko three-run sixth-inning double broke open a close Game 1 battle, lifting the defending Valley League champs to an 11-1 win over the Charles Town Cannons in Game 1 of the VBL Finals.

Krieg (4-0) gave up a run on four hits in his seven innings on the mound, striking out nine and walking three. The game was much closer than the final score would seem to indicate, with the tally at just 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth, when the Generals loaded the bases with two outs off Tyler Dearden (1-2). Marcinko lined a 2-1 pitch into the gap in right-center to clear the bases and push the Waynesboro lead to 6-1.

A Travis Naraine two-run single keyed a five-run Waynesboro seventh that put the game out of reach.

The win puts the Generals one victory away from back-to-back VBL championships. Waynesboro travels to Charles Town for Game 2 of the championship series Tuesday night with the first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
