gens-braves3James Reeves struck out nine in a solid outing on the mound, and the Staunton Braves rode his effort to a 7-3 win over the Waynesboro Generals on Thursday.

Reeves (1-1) pitched into the seventh inning to pick up the win, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits. He was only in trouble in one inning, the sixth, when the Generals were able to plate two on a two-out, two-run single by Terrance Dedrick (junior, Auburn) to cut a 4-0 Braves lead to 4-2.

Staunton got its breathing room right back in the seventh off Waynesboro reliever Bryce Danielson, the big blow coming on a two-run single off the bat of James Vasquez, who knocked in three runs on the night to improve his Valley League-leading RBI total to 24.

The Vasquez hit extended the Braves’ lead to 7-2. Waynesboro was able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh when JoJo Woods (junior, Central Florida) scored on a throwing error, but Staunton relievers Frank Grandinette and Ross White shut the Generals down in the eighth and ninth to close out the win.

Jeff Conley (junior, Alderson-Broaddus) took the loss for Waynesboro, giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits in five innings of work to fall to 0-2 on the season.

The loss drops Waynesboro to 4-5 on the season.

The Generals are on the road Friday at Covington before returning home for games Saturday and Sunday at Linco Park at Kate Collins Field. On Saturday, Waynesboro hosts New Market, and on Sunday, the Generals host the Harrisonburg Turks.
