Waynesboro beats nationally ranked Woodstock, 12-3

wlogo2JoJo Woods led off the game with a homer, fueling a five-run first for Waynesboro that pushed the Generals to a 12-3 win over Woodstock on Wednesday.

Woods (junior, Central Florida), named earlier in the day to the Valley League All-Star Game, went 3-for-6 at the plate on the night. Patrick Mazeika (freshman, Stetson) also had three hits and drew two walks to raise his batting average through four games to .462 and his on-base percentage to .588.

Julius Gaines (sophomore, Florida International) had three hits in four trips and scored a run and also knocked in a run.

Sikes Orvis (junior, Ole Miss) had a two-run single in the first, and Jeff Conley (junior, Alderson-Broaddus) had a three-RBI double in the fourth that broke the game open, giving the Generals a commanding 10-0 lead.

All told, Waynesboro had 17 hits on the night against North Division-leading Woodstock, which came into the game ranked 14th in the country in the Perfect Game USA summer baseball rankings.

Starting pitcher Corey Armentrout (sophomore, Bridgewater) improved to 2-1 on the season, giving up just an unearned run on four hits in six innings of work, striking out seven and walking none.

Waynesboro travels to Winchester on Wednesday. After an off-day on Thursday, the Generals return home on Friday to host Strasburg.
