Volunteers Needed to End Hunger

sscSenior hunger increasingly puts individuals at greater health risks and puts an additional strain on charity food providers. You can join a dedicated group of volunteers who want to put an end to this problem!

Valley Program for Aging Services (VPAS) recently received a grant from the National Council on Aging (NCOA) for the Senior SNAP Enrollment Initiative. This national program helps organizations like VPAS assist persons 60 and older to apply and enroll for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

VPAS is seeking volunteers willing to learn about SNAP in order to explain this benefit to individuals served at a local food pantry. The NCOA project will provide training at several food pantries in Staunton, Augusta and Waynesboro. The specific duties would be to encourage individuals at the food pantries to apply for SNAP, to complete a pre-screening form for financial eligibility, and then refer them to a VPAS staff member or the Department of Social Services.

Please call Kathryn Coit, outreach specialist, at 540-949-7141 or 800-868-8727 to fight hunger right here in our neighborhoods.
