vmi david gearyVMI third baseman David Geary has been named a Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American, according to information released Friday by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Geary becomes only the third VMI baseball player ever to earn Academic All-American honors, joining Mike Lamore (1984) and Nate Shepperson (1996) who were also named to the third team.

Geary leaves VMI with a 3.71 GPA and many honors, including the 2015-16 Almond Award, this past year’s three-legged stool and the presidency of the honor court. On the field, he hit .320 in his final collegiate season and started all but two games for the Keydets.

Geary is the first Keydet to earn Academic All-American honors in any sport since Cabell Willis was named to the third team for track and field/cross country in 2013. The honor is the 24th Academic All-America laurel for a VMI athlete since records began in 1976.
