vmiLooking to turn the tide in the second game of the season and snag a win versus an in-state opponent, the VMI men’s soccer team fell by a 5-0 score to visiting Liberty Tuesday evening at Patchin Field.

With the loss, the Keydets fall to 0-2 on the season while the Flames improve to 2-0.

The Flames’ Tresor Mbuyu was effective on the pitch for Liberty as he recorded his first career hat trick and career high seven points by registering three goals during the game and assisting another goal. In the sixth minute of the match, Mbuyu took a cross from Nico Bellarde and flipped the ball over VMI keeper Broden Schull’s hands to allow it to bounce into the corner of the net for Liberty’s first goal. He would strike twice more in the opening half to lead the Flames to a 3-0 advantage at the break.

Matthew Zaczyk and Shane Geisler would go on to add insurance goals in the second half for the Flames.

VMI was led by freshmen TJ Hurd, Marco Reyes, Carson Knox and Justin Riescher as each recorded a shot attempt for VMI. Riescher’s attempt required a save from Flame keeper Brogan Engbers, who earned the shutout victory. Schull finished with five saves for VMI in the loss.

The Keydets return to action Saturday when they hit the road to face Appalachian State. Kickoff is slated for a 7 p.m. start in Boone, North Carolina.
