VMI head men’s soccer coach Jon Freeman has announced that he will step down from his post to pursue another professional opportunity.
Freeman served as head coach of the program since January 2015. Under Freeman’s guidance, the Keydets made large strides of improvement and found many positives to build on moving forward.
“I’m sincerely grateful for Coach Freeman’s contributions to the men’s soccer program and to our department,” said VMI Athletic Director Dave Diles. “While his tenure was relatively brief, Jon worked very hard with our program and I was especially impressed with the intentional work this winter on team building, leadership development and overall commitment to supporting the cadet-athletes on our team.
“Jon departs with our very best wishes for his new opportunity. I anticipate an excellent pool of candidates will emerge and we will work diligently to secure great leadership for our men’s soccer program.”
Senior goalie Alex Guerra was named the Southern Conference Goalkeeper of the Year and to the All-SoCon First Team after leading the nation with 127 saves on the year, averaging a national-best 6.68 saves per game. His 234 career saves over four seasons ranks third most in VMI program history dating to 1972.
Freshman Grant Austin was named to the SoCon All-Freshman team after leading the Keydets with two goals for the season and finished first on the team with five points.
A search for a successor will begin immediately.
